Programs & Initiatives

Advancing justice through knowledge, advocacy, and action

The North Carolina Center for Women’s Justice (NCCWJ) advances justice, equity, dignity, and opportunity for women and girls through research, policy advocacy, public education, resource navigation, and community engagement.

Our programs and initiatives address immediate needs while examining the systemic barriers that affect safety, economic security, educational opportunity, and self-determination.

Through interconnected activities and resources, NCCWJ works to strengthen access to information, expand opportunities for participation, and advance meaningful institutional and social change throughout North Carolina.

ADVOCACY & POLICY INITIATIVES

NCCWJ examines legislation, public policies, and institutional practices that affect the rights, safety, economic security, and opportunities of women and girls.

Our advocacy initiatives include Freedom to Leave, Safe on Campus, and Coerced Debt, which address distinct legal, economic, and institutional barriers.

Through research, policy analysis, public education, and community engagement, these initiatives seek to strengthen awareness, inform policy discussions, and advance equitable institutional practices..

RIGHTS EDUCATION

NCCWJ recognizes that understanding legal rights and protections is essential to informed decision-making, personal autonomy, and self-advocacy.

Our Know Your Rights resource provides accessible educational information concerning employment, housing, reproductive health, personal safety, education, civil rights, and other issues affecting women, girls, and communities.

Through this initiative, NCCWJ seeks to strengthen legal awareness, reduce informational barriers, and support individuals in understanding their rights and available protections.

LEGAL RESOURCE NAVIGATION

NCCWJ recognizes that navigating legal systems can be challenging, particularly when individuals encounter financial, geographic, or informational barriers to obtaining assistance.

Our Legal Resources Directory provides a searchable collection of legal aid organizations, court information, lawyer referral services, and community support resources throughout North Carolina.

Visitors can search by county, legal issue, keyword, and resource type to identify relevant sources of assistance.

Through this initiative, NCCWJ seeks to reduce barriers to legal information, strengthen access to available resources, and help women, girls, and families make informed decisions about their legal needs.

COMMUNITY RESOURCE NAVIGATION

Access to reliable information about essential services is critical to personal stability, safety, health, economic security, and educational opportunity.

NCCWJ’s NC Resource Directory connects individuals and families with information about organizations and programs addressing housing, food insecurity, healthcare, financial assistance, education, personal safety, and other essential needs throughout North Carolina.

Through this initiative, NCCWJ seeks to reduce informational barriers, strengthen awareness of available community resources, and help women, girls, and families identify services that support their well-being, stability, and self-determination.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT & COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

NCCWJ recognizes that meaningful civic participation begins with access to information, awareness of community organizations, and opportunities to engage in the decisions and institutions that shape our communities.

Our Civic Engagement Center connects North Carolinians with advocacy organizations, civic information, and resources for participating in public decision-making. The tool helps individuals explore issues affecting their communities, identify organizations working on those issues, and discover opportunities for civic involvement.

Through this initiative, NCCWJ seeks to strengthen civic awareness, expand community connections, and empower women and girls to participate meaningfully in the civic life of their towns, cities, counties, and state.

COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE & OUTREACH

NCCWJ recognizes that material hardship and limited access to essential goods can create barriers to health, personal stability, dignity, and opportunity for women, girls, and families.

Through community assistance and outreach activities, NCCWJ coordinates donations and distributions of menstrual hygiene products, personal care supplies, and other essential goods to help address immediate community needs.

These efforts complement our broader research, advocacy, and educational initiatives by responding to practical challenges while supporting individual well-being and community stability.

As organizational resources and partnerships expand, NCCWJ seeks to strengthen the capacity, coordination, and sustainability of its community assistance efforts throughout North Carolina.

RESEARCH & POLICY ANALYSIS

NCCWJ recognizes that advancing justice and equity requires a thorough understanding of the social, economic, legal, and institutional conditions affecting women and girls throughout North Carolina.

Through research and policy analysis, NCCWJ examines systemic inequities, legislative developments, public policies, and institutional practices that influence women’s rights, safety, economic security, educational access, and opportunities for advancement.

Our work emphasizes evidence-informed inquiry, legislative monitoring, policy evaluation, and the identification of structural barriers that contribute to disparities in resources, protections, and opportunities.

Through these efforts, NCCWJ seeks to strengthen public understanding, inform policy discussions, support institutional accountability, and contribute to meaningful and sustainable systemic change.

SUSTAINING & EXPANDING OUR WORK

Advancing justice, equity, dignity, and opportunity for women and girls requires sustained investment, institutional collaboration, and a shared commitment to meaningful change.

NCCWJ relies on philanthropic support, strategic partnerships, and community engagement to strengthen organizational capacity, sustain existing initiatives, and expand access to resources, education, advocacy, and assistance throughout North Carolina.

Contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations, and community partners help build the financial and institutional foundation necessary to address immediate needs while advancing long-term solutions to systemic inequities.

Together, we can strengthen opportunities for women and girls to exercise their rights, access essential resources, participate meaningfully in their communities, and shape their futures with dignity and self-determination.
